Deduplication vs compression

Subject:

Is de-duplication a good option compared to compression and how to I enable de-duplication in a QuantaStor system.

Detail:

We would recommend against enabling de-duplication as this will hurt performance. This is why we do not display this as a feature in Quantastor today. We are looking to capitalize on new features, such as metadata offload, to improve performance for de-duplication enabled storage pools. We may make this feature available in future versions of QuantaStor if the performance gains are acceptable.

There are many different compression technologies available but as a default Quantastor uses lz4 as it delivers the best between compression and speed. Compression ratios normally hit around 1.5x but depend on the data itself, if it can be highly compressed, you will see a greater compression ratio.
